MARINE SPATIAL PLANNING WORKSHOP SUMMARY
A Regional Workshop on Marine Spatial Planning: A Technical Learning Session, organized by the World Wildlife Fund and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), was held on 1-2 June 2011 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. MANAGEMENT PLAN FOR THE BRAS D'OR LAKES
The Bras d'Or Lakes Collaborative Environmental Planning Initiative (CEPI) released a new management plan called "The Spirit of the Lakes Speaks" on 8 July 2011 in Eskasoni, Nova Scotia. The plan is a living document intended to guide decisions and actions with a well-rounded approach to managing the Bras d'Or Lakes ecosystem that acknowledges both Aboriginal and contemporary knowledge - http://brasdorcepi.ca.
BAY OF FUNDY SCIENCE WORKSHOP
The 9th biennial Bay of Fundy Science Workshop, jointly sponsored by the Bay of Fundy Ecosystem Partnership (BoFEP) and the Atlantic Coastal Action Program Saint John (ACAPSJ), will take place on 27-30 September 2011 in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. CANADA'S 16TH BIOSPHERE RESERVE
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has designated the Bras d'Or Lakes in Nova Scotia as Canada's 16th Biosphere Reserve. UNESCO's designation of this site is the result of a collaborative process that started in 2005 and involved First Nation representatives, provincial and federal government agencies, academics, and citizens of the region - http://www.blbra.ca.
OIL SPILL MITIGATION SCIENCE
- A video on oil spill mitigation provides a brief overview of oil spill countermeasure research conducted by the Centre for Offshore Oil, Gas and Energy Research (COOGER), based at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. PUBLIC CONSULTATION ON ICZM AND MSP IN EUROPE
An Impact Assessment (IA) to evaluate further EU-policy options on Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) was launched in 2010, building upon a 2002 European Parliament and Council Recommendation on the implementation of ICZM. The IA was done jointly with the assessment of possible future actions on Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP). An internet-based public consultation was carried out on the main challenges and opportunities for ICZM and MSP; the provisional results are available at http://ec.europa.eu/environment/iczm/pdf/report_online_consultation.pdf.
SMALL-SCALE FISHERIES GLOBAL RESEARCH NETWORK
Following the first World Small-Scale Fisheries Congress held in Bangkok in October 2010, the "Too Big To Ignore: Global Partnership for Small-Scale Fisheries Research" has been formed. The network has recently initiated an exercise to identify the top 100 research questions that, if answered, would substantially advance the understanding of small-scale fisheries to address issues in this sector. EL NIÑO AND INCREASED SEA LEVELS AND STORM SURGES
A new study by NOAA published in the American Meteorological Society's Journal, 'Monthly Weather Review', found that from 1961 to 2010, in strong El Niño years, the studied coastal areas, Boston, Atlantic City, Norfolk, and Charleston, experienced nearly three times the average number of storm surge events - http://journals.ametsoc.org/doi/abs/10.1175/MWR-D-10-05043.1.
THE GULF OF MEXICO AT A GLANCE
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration report titled "The Gulf of Mexico at a Glance: A Second Glance" provides economic and ecological highlights on the Gulf Coast Region's coastal communities, economy, and ecosystems. STATE OF THE CLIMATE REPORT
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's annual "State of the Climate Report" describes trends in more than 40 climate variables. The peer-reviewed report found that: the 2010 global average surface temperature was among the two warmest on record; the average sea surface temperature for 2010 was the 3rd warmest on record; and sea level continued to rise across the world's oceans - http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/bams-state-of-the-climate/2010.php.
KEY MARINE CONSERVATION SPOTS
A study published recently in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences identifies the 20 most important regions of the world's oceans and lakes for the survival of marine mammal species.
