STATE OF THE ARCTIC COAST 2010: SCIENTIFIC REVIEW AND OUTLOOK

The report documents the status and current and anticipated changes in the most sensitive Arctic coastal areas. It is organized in three parts: the first provides an assessment of the state of Arctic coastal systems under three broad disciplinary themes – physical systems, ecological systems, and human dimensions; the second examines progress in integrative approaches to monitoring, understanding, and managing change in Arctic coastal systems; and the third identifies data gaps and research priorities over the coming decade - http://www.arcticcoasts.org.

PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND, CANADA 2010 STATE OF THE ENVIRONMENT

The Prince Edward Island 2010 State of the Environment Report has been released. The report, an update of the 2003 study, measures data on key indicators of the health of the Island's natural environment. Progress in a numbers of areas has been reported, based on a suite of indicators - http://www.gov.pe.ca/fae/state/index.php3.

JUNE 8TH - WORLD OCEANS DAY

World Oceans Day was officially recognized by the UN in 2008. The theme of the 2011 and 2012 events is "Youth: the Next Wave for Change". Activities celebrating our oceans and coasts are carried out each year across the world throughout the month of June – see http://worldoceansday.org for details. Events planned in Atlantic Canada are listed on the ACZISC website at http://coinatlantic.ca/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=442.

CALL FOR PAPERS: 9TH BOFEP SCIENCE WORKSHOP

30 June is the deadline for submitting abstracts to the 9th Bay of Fundy Science Workshop, scheduled for 27-30 September 2011 in Saint John, New Brunswick. The theme is "Protecting the Watersheds and Estuaries of the Bay of Fundy: Issues, Science and Management" - http://bofep.org/workshop2011.htm.

COASTAL ZONE 2011

The Conference is scheduled for 17-21 July 2011 in Chicago, Illinois, USA. The Conference themes are: Planning for resilient coasts, Great Lakes, and ecosystems; Healthy habitats, and coastal and Great Lakes communities; Observing, modelling and monitoring; and Vibrant coastal, Great Lakes and marine economies. The focus areas are governance and policy; implementation; measuring success; and outreach and engagement - http://www.doi.gov/initiatives/CZ11/index.htm.

OCEAN ACIDIFICATION

The National Academies (USA) has published the report "Ocean Acidification: A National Strategy to Meet the Challenges of a Changing Ocean". A key finding of the study is that a global network of chemical and biological observations is needed to monitor changes in ocean conditions attributable to acidification - http://dels.nas.edu/Report/Ocean-Acidification-National-Strategy/12904.

KEEPING THE GREEN ECONOMY BLUE

The workshop was held on 29 April 2011 at the UN Headquarters in New York. The workshop assessed the current state of the oceans and marine environment; reviewed the commitments made at the 1992 UN Conference on Environment and Development and at the World Summit for Sustainable Development in 2002; and considered social and economic implications and policy recommendations for transitioning to a "blue economy". Workshop reports are available at http://www.iisd.ca/ymb/kgeb.

GLOBAL SEA LEVEL RISE PROJECTIONS

A new report by the International Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme titled "Snow, Water, Ice, Permafrost in the Arctic" finds that Arctic ice and snow are melting faster than previously thought. According to the study, Arctic temperatures from 2005 through 2010 have been the highest since record keeping began in 1880. The report also projects sea levels to rise by 35 to 63 inches by 2100 - http://www.amap.no/swipa.

MODELLING LAND-USE CHANGES IN EUROPEAN COASTS

The Joint Research Centre has released a report titled "Coastal Zones - Policy alternatives impacts on European Coastal Zones 2000-2050". The study applied a land-use model to simulate two policy alternatives relevant to Integrated Coastal Zone Management. An "Uncontrolled" and a "Sustainable" policy option were compared with a third neutral development scenario and a set of indicators was computed on the basis of the projected European land use maps - http://ec.europa.eu/environment/enveco/impact_studies/pdf/land_use_modelling%20adaptation_activities_coastal.pdf.
