FRAMEWORK FOR CANADA'S NETWORK OF MARINE PROTECTED AREAS
The National Framework for Canada's Network of MPAs was approved in principle on 1 September by the Canadian Council of Fisheries and Aquaculture Ministers. The document provides strategic direction for the design of a national network of MPAs, including the vision and goals; design properties; eligibility criteria for inclusion in the network; network governance structure; and guidance for promoting national consistency in bioregional network planning - http://www.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/oceans/publications/dmpaf-eczpm/framework-cadre2011-eng.asp.
TIDAL ENERGY INSTITUTE LAUNCHED AT ACADIA UNIVERSITY
Acadia University announced the formation of the Acadia Tidal Energy Institute on 1 September 2011. The Institute is the only research institute in North America focused solely on assessing tidal energy resources and the associated environmental challenges and socio-economic opportunities - http://www2.acadiau.ca/acadia-news-reader/items/acadia-university-launches-acadia-tidal-energy-institute.html.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS OF WAVE AND TIDAL ENERGY
The ICES Study Group on the Environmental Impacts of Wave and Tidal Energy met for the first time on 29-31 March 2011 in Edinburgh, UK. The aim of the Group is to provide improved access to new research findings, integrating these into an overall framework of information to support planning and management of wave and tidal energy activities and identifying research gaps currently hindering such planning and management. Details, including the meeting report, are available at http://www.ices.dk/workinggroups/ViewWorkingGroup.aspx?ID=519.
NOVA SCOTIA'S NATURAL RESOURCES STRATEGY
'The Path We Share: A Natural Resources Strategy for Nova Scotia, 2011-2020' focuses specifically on biodiversity, forests, minerals and parks. It identifies 23 goals and the strategic actions to achieve them. A companion document entitled 'From Strategy to Action' outlines 32 early actions to be completed over the next two years - http://www.gov.ns.ca/natr/strategy.
UK MARINE PLANNING SOCIO-ECONOMIC STUDY
The United Kingdom Marine Management Organisation has published the Marine Planning socio-economic study entitled 'Maximising the socio-economic benefits of marine planning for English coastal communities'. The study is intended to help marine planners, developers, local authorities and others with an interest in sustainable development in the marine area to understand various issues affecting coastal communities - http://www.marinemanagement.org.uk/marineplanning/se.htm.
CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACTS ON MARINE ECOSYSTEMS
The European Union CLAMER project aims to raise awareness of the effects of climate change on the marine environment and their socio-economic consequences. It builds on the concept that there is a gap between what is known through research and what policy makers and the public know and understand, and that this gap needs to be filled to help catalyze formulation and acceptance of the necessary mitigation and adaptation measures - http://www.clamer.eu.
ARE DEEP-SEA FISHERIES SUSTAINABLE?
In the article entitled 'Sustainability of deep-sea fisheries' recently published online in the journal Marine Policy, the authors, including marine ecologists, fisheries biologists, economists, mathematicians and international policy experts, argue that, with rare exceptions, deep-sea fisheries are unsustainable - http://www.marine-conservation.org/media/filer_public/2011/09/06/norse_et_al_2012_sustainability_of_deep-sea_fisheries.pdf.
UNDERSTANDING THE ANTARCTIC TERRAIN
Data from Canada's RADARSAT-2 satellite and European and Japanese Earth Observation satellites has contributed to a new understanding of Antarctic terrain. Researchers have discovered unique terrain features that indicate the direction and velocity of ice in Antarctica which will provide insight into ice melt and future sea rise. A link to an animation of Antarctic ice flow is available at http://www.asc-csa.gc.ca/eng/media/news_releases/2011/0818.asp.
GEOCONNECTIONS ANNOUNCES THE 2011 INVITATION FOR PROJECTS
The renewed GeoConnections program of Natural Resources Canada has announced an invitation for projects that will advance the operational policies, standards and related best practices required by organizations developing, contributing to and using the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI). Expressions of interest must be submitted by 14 October 2011. For more information see http://geoconnections.nrcan.gc.ca/8.
