 ELECTRONIC CONFERENCE ON MARINE RESEARCH AND INDUSTRY WORKING TOGETHER
The Sustainable Marine Ecosystem Unit of the EC programme Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development is hosting an electronic conference entitled How Can Marine Research and Industry Work Together in the Future? The conference will include four one-week sessions beginning on 3 April 2000.

 COASTAL ZONE CANADA 2000 CONFERENCE
30 April 2000 is the deadline for submitting abstracts to the CZC 2000 Conference scheduled for 17-22 September 2000 in Saint John, New Brunswick. The Conference will focus on four inter-related sub-themes: coastal stewardship; the cultural perspectives and experiences of Aboriginal peoples; coastal health; and oceans governance.  COASTAL WATER TRAIL
Planning is underway on Atlantic Canada's first recreational water trail due to open 1 July 2000. This initial pilot project will link boaters with waterfront accommodations, services and attractions from Halifax to Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.  MARINE PROTECTED AREAS
The Musquash Estuary in New Brunswick was confirmed as an Area of Interest (AOI) by Fisheries and Oceans Canada on 8 February 2000. Musquash is the second inshore AOI in the MPA program under the Oceans Act in the Maritimes. Basin Head in Prince Edward Island was the first.  HANDS-ON TRAINING ON TRIMBLE GPS
28 March 2000 is the deadline to apply for the three-day Hands-on Training Session on Trimble Global Positioning Systems (GPS), scheduled for 11-13 April 2000 at the Centre of Geographic Sciences (COGS) in Lawencetown, Nova Scotia. The training will feature Pathfinder ProXR Trimble products and will focus on utilizing hand-held GPS units in the field to collect data and computer processing the collected data.  BAY OF FUNDY ECOSYSTEM PARTNERSHIP WORKSHOP
30 April 2000 is the deadline for submitting abstracts to the 4th Bay of Fundy Science Workshop being held on 20-21 September in Saint John, New Brunswick, in conjunction with the Coastal Zone Canada 2000 Conference. The workshop theme is Opportunities and Challenges for Protecting, Restoring and Enhancing Coastal Habitats in the Bay of Fundy. For details, access the BoFEP website.

 MINAS BASIN PROJECT
The Minas Basin Project will develop a method to select species of significance to the Minas Basin and use species/habitat profiles to prioritize and map the habitats. Maps and habitat information would subsequently be used by government agencies, conservation groups and the scientific community in habitat protection.  CANADIAN RURAL PARTNERSHIP

 LAND CONSERVATION PROGRAM IN MAINE
In 1987, Maine's voters approved the Land for Maine's Future Program to buy land for conservation with an emphasis on water access. $35 million were used to acquire 65,000 acres, including 171 miles of waterfront. This fall, 69% of voters approved a new $50 million for the Program provided that a matching $25 million can be secured from other private or public sources.  DIRECTORY OF IMPORTANT BIRD AREAS
The protection of bird sites is crucial to the successful migration, well-being and reproduction of hundreds of species of birds. The Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) brought together bird conservation specialists from Canada, Mexico and the US to identify critical North American sites. The results have been published by the CEC in the book North American Important Bird Areas: A Directory of 150 Key Conservation Sites.

 WISE PRACTICES IN COASTAL MANAGEMENT
The UNESCO-Bilko project has produced 7 computer-based distance learning modules on applications of remote sensing to coastal regions in the past 10 years, and it will develop another 6 new modules over the coming years. Two of these modules are: Coastal erosion and Vulnerability through the eye of a satellite. Contributions to these two modules are being sought.  PROTECTING THE UK COASTLINE
The UK Government will be exploring ways of giving greater protection to vulnerable parts of the British coast. The Government announced that it was launching a consultative process which could result in the setting-up of marine environmental high risk areas (MEHRAs), including a methodology for choosing MEHRAs. World Day for Water will be celebrated on 22 March 2000. UNESCO is the UN agency preparing events and activities this year.
