Who We Are
The mission of COINAtlantic is to promote, facilitate and influence information management as well as policies and programs that enhance integrated coastal and ocean management in Atlantic Canada. The three main priorities of the organization are:
- Encouraging action on the implementation of Integrated Coastal and Ocean Management (ICOM) as a tool to realize environmental, economic and social sustainability.
- Collaborative sharing of data and information.
- Encouraging the engagement of organizations in the Steering Committee that is reflective of the diversity of the ICOM Community of Practice.
COINAtlantic addresses these priorities by delivering products such as regular meetings and occasional workshops, the monthly Coastal Update e-newsletter, the ICOM information hub, and the development of Coastal and Ocean Information Network (COIN) Atlantic tools to encourage the sharing and accessibility of data and information. The organization also leads or participates in projects with other organizations that advance these priorities including the OBIS project, which involves working with partner organizations to increase the availability of biological data relevant to ecosystems.
In part of celebrating our 25th Anniversary as an organization, The Atlantic Coastal Zone Information Steering Committee (ACZISC) will officially be launched under the brand COINAtlantic (Coastal and Ocean Information Network Atlantic). This brand transition will help signify the plans and direction that the organization is taking as efforts continue regarding resource development, growing our Community of Practice, and strengthening our ability to influence effective Integrated Coastal and Ocean Management (ICOM). Streamlining the entities within the organization and placing the emphasis on our involvement within a larger network will help provide better service, and an improved delivery of our products.
One of the major components of the brand transition is the implementation of our brand new website. The redesign of this resource will improve our function as a hub for coastal and ocean resources within Atlantic Canada, as well as increasing access/availability to the data and information that will help Atlantic Canadian effectively manage our coastlines and marine ecosystems.
The Atlantic Coastal Zone Information Steering Committee (ACZISC) was formed in 1992 by the Council of Maritime Premiers. After 25 years advancing Integrated Coastal and Ocean Management in Atlantic Canada, it is moving to the brand Coastal and Ocean Information Network Atlantic (COINAtlantic).
