Fisheries and Oceans Canada is leading a marine spatial planning process that brings together relevant authorities, stakeholders and rightsholders to better coordinate how we use and manage marine spaces to achieve ecological, economic and social objectives. In support of this program, COINAtlantic hosted The ‘Data Sharing for an Atlantic Canada Marine Atlas’ workshop in March 2020 to act as a review opportunity. The workshop brought stakeholders together from across Eastern Canada to share their needs and data priorities for a marine planning atlas, and discuss barriers and opportunities for contributing data to the upcoming atlas. Fisheries and Oceans Canada has announced the official launch of the Canada Marine Planning Atlas (the Atlas). The Atlas is an interactive mapping tool which will support marine spatial planning (MSP) by providing access to published data and information on economic, ecological and sociocultural activities occurring in Canada’s marine spaces. Learn more about the Atlas on the website.
The Atlas allows users to compare MSP Data from multiple sources, including importing their own data during their session, consolidating MSP-relevant information, exploring data using GIS functionality, as well as data download and metadata access. Training resources are available within the Atlas (Atlas Pacific / Atlas Atlantic) and on the Atlas website, including a user guide, and many step-by-step tutorials.
